The Mission of Troop 48 from Brian Issing, Troop 48 Scoutmaster

The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

Troop 48 was founded in 1929 for the purpose of providing young men with fun activities while teaching them to be good citizens who are strong in character and are physically fit. These four attributes are as valuable today as they were during the Great Depression.

Although originally founded in South Memphis, the Troop now resides in Germantown, Tennessee.

What sets this Troop apart from others is that it has a strong set of ties back to its early years. The Scoutmaster of 1931, Mr. Charles H. Church, has a son who is still a registered committee member. An active assistant Scoutmaster, Mr. Edgar Provine, joined the Troop in 1950 and has been the Scoutmaster three times for a combined tenure of 17 years and 3 months. He was the Scoutmaster to two of our current registered adults, Dr. Gene Scobey and Mr. Barry W. Moore. Barry was Scoutmaster for over 13 years, the longest continuous tenure. Both of these men have sons in the Troop.

The current Scoutmaster, Mr. Brian Issing, has been a leader in the Troop since 1988. Another assistant Scoutmaster, Mr. Phil Lemoine, has been a leader since 1993 and his son became an Eagle Scout in the Troop in 1998.

So you see, the longevity of the leaders, coupled w/ their tie to its history, makes for a solid link back to a time when the B.S.A. was only in its second decade.

The Troop 48 Goals for 2012 - These goals were set forth by the Scouts during our January Patrol Leader’s Council meeting. It’s important that the Scouts have a say in the program of the Troop so they agreed to these for this year.

  1. Troop Spaghetti Supper – Each Scout to sell at least 8 tickets.

  2. Eastern District Camp-o-ree:
    1. Each patrol to score 100% on the knot tying event.
    2. 1 patrol to earn The Baden-Powell Patrol Award.
    3. 2 patrols to earn Baden-Powell Runner-up recognition.

  3. Summer Camp at Skymont Scout Reservation:
    1. 95% of Scouts to attend.
    2. Each veteran Scout to earn at least 4 merit badges or take part in the Cumberland Adventure, Project C.O.P.E. or similar.

  4. Advancement:
    1. 2 new Eagle Scouts by year end.
    2. 65% of Scouts to advance at least one rank.

  5. Wreath Sales – Each Scout to sell at least 12 items.

  6. Popcorn Sales – Each Scout to have at least $180.00 in sales.

  7. Have an increase in membership, year over year.

  8. Have an average trip participation rate of 80% across 11 trips.

  9. Not lose any Scouts to disinterest.

The Patrol Leaders’ Council would like to see each of our three patrols grow to eight Scouts. (Eight is the number that Lord Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting, decided was the optimum number for a patrol.) By having a Troop of this size we would be able to have some strong intra-patrol competition as well as be able to provide a good level of service back to the community.

We are currently conducting a recruitment drive to get us to this number. Please stop by one Tuesday evening and see why our program has stood the test of time.
