Troop 48 Update 4/25/2012

	Troop 48 Weekly Update:

	Date Change for Canoe Trip

Due to scheduling conflicts with Troop Leader's who are trained as BSA Lifeguard, Safety Afloat and Safe Swim Defense, the Troop Committee decided at its meeting in March that it was best to move the canoe trip to the next weekend, May 11 - 13. Mother's Day was discussed at length, but the committee felt it was best to keep the trip rather than cancel it altogether. It is a BSA requirement to have trained Leaders in the above mentioned areas before conducting activities on water.

	Troop T-Shirts for Summer Camp

Scouts attending summer camp are expected to wear a class B Troop 48 T shirt each day during camp (6 days). Facilities for washing are not very practical (you could wash one in a sink at the campsite and hang out to dry). Most Scouts will want a few extra shirts. These shirts will need to be ordered in advance.

If you will need additional T shirts please see the attached order form with types and prices of t-shirts. T-shirts may be purchased in either 100% cotton or moisture management which is nylon or a combination of the two kinds of t-shirts. We order only adult sizes. For both types of shirts add $2.50 for XXL and $5.00 for XXXL. Money is due on delivery of t-shirts. You may bring your order to scouts next week, Tuesday, May 1, or you may send your order to me via e mail at sartor5@bellsouth.net by Friday, May 4.

If you need additional Boy Scout socks or official Scout shorts to send to camp, you will need to purchase these items at the scout shop on Hollywood street or visit the troop’s collection of gently-used uniform parts that may have your son's size in them. Feel free to look through the selection before heading to the Scout Shop. All are free for the taking but all we ask is that you eventually replace it with something he has outgrown. The boxes are labeled and in the meeting room closet.

	Eleven Point River Canoe Trip

Cost for the Canoe Trip/Campout on the Eleven Point River in Missouri will be $60.00 per person. This is due on May 1st. (Includes Food, Gas and $32.00 per person for canoe rental)

Final Payment for Summer Camp

A final payment of $10.00 for Summer Camp is due on May 1st. (Campership funds applied making total Summer Camp registration fee $165.00)

Troop 48's Success at Eastern District Camporee

Troop 48 did very well at the camporee this past weekend, Both the Davy Crockett and Tiger patrols earned a red ribbon which put them in the 16th percentile of the 89 patrols in attendance. But the Eagle patrol earned a blue ribbon, one of only four patrols that did. This put them in the top 4 1/2% of all of the patrols that participated.

	Way to go Troop 48.

As an aside, a Mr. Harold Jackson visited us on Saturday. He was a Scout in Troop 48 in its early years leaving when he went off to college in 1948. He had Googled Troop 48 and was suprised we were still around. So, when he next needed to visit his grandaughter in Memphis he made it for a weekend that we would be at Camp Currier.

He regaled us in many a story which we enjoyed. We do hope that he can attend our 85th anniversary dinner in 2014.

Troop 48 Weekly Update-Merit Badge Classes Offered

Troop 48 Spring/Summer Merit Badge Opportunities:
This spring and summer, there are numerous opportunities for your scout to earn merit badges at sanctioned merit badge events. Each event has different cost, availability, and class offerings, so please consider each carefully to see if they match your family schedule, budget, and desired classes.

Brighton, TN Troop 260 Merit Badge Workshop - March 31, 2012
Many talented people with merit badge related skills reside in this area, and we have asked some of them to be merit badge counselors for our workshop. We are pleased that attendance at the workshops has been exceptional, which means there is interest in continuing to hold this event, as long as we can make it a “first class” event for the participants. After all, we owe it to the Scouts and adult leaders to do it right! Our merit badge workshop is patterned after the Merit Badge Day’s held at the National Scouting Museum in Murray, KY until the museum moved a few years ago.

Cost: $20 per scout. Registration is open now. See the attached document for a list of the classes offered. Two classes per scout.
NOTE: One or more trained adult volunteers are needed to provide transportation to and from this event. Without a volunteer, it will fall to the scout's family to provide transportation.

2012 Merit Badge College at Cordova Middle School - April 28, 2012
This Event is sponsored by Troop 332 of Covenant United Methodist Church. The Merit Badge College is Troop 332's sixth program offering merit badge classes taught by experienced counselors and professionals while maintaining limited classroom size.

Cost: $25 per scout. Registration begins March 19. See the attached document for a list of the classes offered. Two classes per scout.

Summer Camp 2012 at Skymont Scout Reservation - June 9 - 16, 2012
Summer camp has numerous merit badges and other activities to offer. Both the camp and Troop 48 place restrictions on the classes and/or activities each scout can participate with. Registration for classes opens on March 6, and the popular classes will fill up soon. Be sure to get your Summer Camp MB Request Form turned in as soon as possible, to ensure your scout gets signed up the classes he wants most, and has the best summer camp experience possible. The attached MB List and Schedule will assist in choosing the right classes.

Cost: $225 per scout. Registration begins on March 6. See the attached request form for more details. Up to five classes per scout.

Turn in registration information for all these events to Daren Davis, Advancement Chairman.
Remember that Scoutmaster Issing must approve all MB classes before applications will be issued to scouts.

Troop 48 will sponsor its 57th annual Spaghetti Supper on Friday, February 17th. The event provides not only a great meal and warm fellowship, but also an opportunity for our Scouts to practice teamwork and personal skills as they serve our guests. At this week's Troop meeting, each Scout received a sheet of eight (8) Spaghetti Supper tickets. Scouts who sell at least eight tickets will enjoy a free meal.

The Spaghetti Supper is our most important fundraiser of the year. Please support your Scouts by offering tickets to your friends, neighbors, and colleagues at work!

Awards Court of Honor and Summer Camp Informational Meeting

Award Court of Honor and Summer Camp kickoff meeting will be held February 7, 2012

	SUMMER CAMP COST:

During the January committee meeting, it was determined that Summer Camp would cost $225.00 per Scout. This helps cover the cost of gas and food for Saturday dinner through Sunday lunch.

The updated Summer Camp Fee Schedule is as follows:

 $75.00 Deposit due Feb 7th

 $75.00 additional due March 6th

 $75.00 balance due May 1st*

 * The balance due in May could be lower depending on camperships awarded.

	CAMPERSHIPS:

The Troop has allocated funds to be used for "camperships" to allow Scouts to attend summer camp. A campership will be made available to Scouts who have a family financial need. (Scouts are encouraged to earn a portion of their camp fees in following the Scout Law tenet of, "A Scout is Thrifty".) Camperships are dependent upon the amount of available funds and the number of Scouts requesting assistance. Requests must be made before February 29, 2012 and will be kept confidential. Please see Scoutmaster Brian Issing or Treasurer, Lynn Poore to inquire further.

	HEALTH AND MEDICAL:

Don't forget to have your son's Health and Medical Record filled out and completed when he has his yearly physical (Parts A, B and C). All Scouts need this prior to Summer Camp. See attached or visit this link: http://www.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/whole.pdf

Any Leader or Dad planning to attend camp, if only for a day, must also have a completed Health and Medical Form on file with the Troop. (Parts A, B and C).

The Troop is in the process of updating all Health and Medical Records. If you plan to attend future campouts, a completed Health and Medical Form should be on file with the Troop. (Parts A, B, C) One Troop Leader's life was perhaps extended because doctor's caught a serious condition, unknown to the patient. Don't delay, get your physical today!

	Fire Sale

There are about a dozen bundles of well-seasoned Minnesota hardwood firewood still available for sale. We've had this wood for almost two years now so expect it to burn very efficiently. This is the same wood, albeit older, that Kroger is selling for $4.99 a bundle. Make an offer to the Scoutmaster and it could be yours. Bidding starts at $30.00 for the lot. Pick-up required by Feb. 7th.

	Camporee Practice

Our next Camporee Practices are on the following dates from 9-12 at Faith Presbyterian Church: February 18, March 3, and March 17. Please plan on attending all practices. Dress appropriately for the weather outside and meet at the Ralph Moak garage.
